The hammocks in Yucatan have been used from unmemorable times, some people say that it was a worn custom of Haiti, but actually it's not known by accuracy where it comes from.

The municipalities in Yucatan where the majority of the hammocks are elaborated are Tixcocob, Chumayel and Teabo.The elaboration of a hammock is a whole art, which is transmitted from generation to generation. Two needles and a frame are in use as for work tools; the time needed to elaborate a hammock depends in occasions of the size of the same, so one can range from one week or up to 15 days.

The sizes change according to the needs of the person, there are small hammocks for babies, medium sized or individual, larger for two persons, matrimonial and its extra sized version.

Mainly, the hammocks are elaborated in Nylon and cotton, though also they can be in another material as the crochet, fabric, etc. The colors go from the showiest and happy up to the natural color of the fabric. The price goes in agreement to the materials, the finished ones and quality of the hammock, size, etc. This way we can find hammocks from $140 pesos and up to $650 or more.

Approximately 80% of the tourists who come to Yucatan buys a hammock. Italians, French, German and American in the most. The national tourism does not feel very attracted by this type of purchase.
